Paris Agreement Goal in Danger: Global Warming Warning

The Paris Agreement Goal of limiting global temperature rise to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels is increasingly difficult to achieve. This warning was highlighted in the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Emissions Gap Report 2022: The Closing Window, published on October 21, 2022. However, the situation does not mean that the Paris Climate Agreement has failed. Countries can still limit global warming by taking immediate and ambitious climate action.

Paris Agreement Goal and the 1.5°C Temperature Limit

According to the UNEP report, global temperatures could rise by approximately 2.8°C by the end of this century if current policies continue. Even if countries fulfil their announced climate commitments, temperatures could rise by around 2.4°C. These projections highlight the gap between existing climate promises and the actions required to achieve the Paris Agreement Goal.

The report estimates that global warming could reach 1.7°C to 1.9°C around the middle of the century. Bringing temperatures back below 1.5°C by 2100 would remain possible, but it would require rapid and substantial reductions in greenhouse gas emissions. The Paris Agreement Goal therefore depends on stronger policies and practical action by governments worldwide.

Floods, heatwaves and wildfires are among the climate-related disasters that can become more severe as temperatures rise. UNEP Executive Director Inger Andersen warned that the world must act quickly to reduce emissions and minimise climate risks.

Why Is the Paris Agreement Goal at Risk?

The main challenge is the difference between the emission reductions countries have promised and the measures they are actually implementing. The Paris Agreement Goal requires countries to move beyond announcements and introduce effective policies that reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and storing it for long periods could also contribute to climate action. However, large-scale carbon removal faces technological, financial and practical challenges. It cannot replace the urgent need to reduce emissions at their source.

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has emphasised that exceeding the 1.5°C threshold does not mean the fight against climate change is over. Every fraction of a degree matters because it can influence the severity of climate impacts and the risks faced by communities.

Renewable Energy Can Support the Paris Agreement Goal

Reducing dependence on coal, oil and natural gas is essential to limiting global warming. Governments need to increase investment in solar, wind and other renewable energy sources while improving energy efficiency.

Over the past decade, renewable energy costs have fallen, and several countries have made progress in developing cleaner energy systems. Nevertheless, global progress remains insufficient to meet the targets established under the Paris Climate Agreement.

Accelerating renewable energy projects, modernising electricity grids and developing energy storage systems can help countries reduce emissions. These measures are important for keeping the Paris Agreement Goal within reach and supporting a transition towards cleaner economic growth.

India’s Role in Achieving Climate Targets

India faces the challenge of meeting its growing energy and development needs while reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Expanding renewable energy, improving electricity transmission and supporting low-carbon industries can contribute to this effort.

Climate finance and technology transfer are also important. Developed countries have a significant role in helping developing nations access affordable clean technologies and the financial resources needed to implement climate policies.

International cooperation will be essential to achieving the Paris Agreement Goal. Countries must work together to reduce emissions while recognising the different economic circumstances and development needs of individual nations.

What Must Countries Do Next?

Countries need to strengthen their climate commitments, implement effective emission-reduction policies and accelerate the transition away from fossil fuels. Businesses and industries can also contribute by adopting cleaner technologies and improving energy efficiency.

The Paris Agreement Goal remains an important guide for international climate action. Although the 1.5°C target faces serious challenges, stronger policies and faster emission reductions can still help limit future warming and reduce climate-related risks.
