Cyclone Arnab: Krushnaprasad Administration on Alert, Farmers Fear Crop Damage

Administrative Preparations for Cyclone Arnab

The administration in Krushnaprasad Block of Puri district has completed its preparations in view of the threat posed by Cyclone Arnab, which has developed over the Bay of Bengal. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and taking precautionary measures to protect residents in coastal and island areas.

Newly appointed Block Development Officer (BDO) Bikash Sethi and Assistant Executive Engineer Bijayananda Choudhury visited several villages in the island region. During their visits, they interacted with residents, listened to their concerns and inspected cyclone shelters to assess their readiness for emergencies.

Officials have instructed employees of all 25 gram panchayats to remain alert. Special attention is being given to the seven panchayats located across Chilika Lake, where transportation and communication may become difficult during adverse weather conditions.

Although no major damage has been reported in Krushnaprasad so far, intermittent drizzle continued throughout Tuesday. The administration is keeping a close watch on changing weather conditions and the possible impact of strong winds and rainfall.

Authorities Monitor Chilika Lake and Coastal Areas

The movement of boats and floating bridges on Chilika Lake is being closely monitored. These transport facilities are important for residents who depend on them for daily travel and access to essential services. Adverse weather conditions could disrupt transportation and create difficulties for people living in the island villages.

Residents of Lambapatana and nearby areas under Arakhakuda Gram Panchayat have expressed concern over the roaring sea and high tidal waves. The rough sea conditions have created anxiety among people living close to the coast.

Authorities are advising residents to remain cautious and follow official instructions. People in vulnerable coastal areas need to stay informed about weather updates and be prepared to move to safer locations if evacuation instructions are issued.

Police Warn Fishermen Against Venturing into the Sea

Acting on the instructions of Puri Superintendent of Police Prateek Singh, Niranjan Behera, officer-in-charge of Arakhakuda Marine Police Station, has been conducting awareness activities among fishermen living along the coast and the shores of Chilika Lake.

Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea during the period of unsafe weather. Strong winds, high waves and sudden changes in weather can make fishing dangerous. The warning is intended to reduce risks to fishermen and prevent accidents during the cyclone threat.

Fishermen are taking precautions to secure their boats. According to the report, they are keeping their boats safely submerged in water where appropriate and tying them along the shore to reduce the risk of damage or drifting.

Brahmagiri Tehsildar Debashish Sethi and Krushnaprasad Tehsildar Sahadev Sahu are also prepared to respond to the prevailing situation. Meanwhile, Krushnaprasad Police Station Inspector Jayanta Sethi and the Inspector of Brahmagiri Police Station are closely monitoring the panchayats across the region.

Emergency Preparedness and Public Safety

Coordination among the block administration, police, revenue officials and local panchayats is important during a cyclone alert. Regular communication can help authorities identify vulnerable locations, share warnings and respond quickly if the situation worsens.

Residents should follow announcements issued by authorised agencies and avoid unnecessary travel through coastal areas during dangerous weather. Families should also pay attention to the safety of children, elderly people and those who may need assistance during an emergency.

Fishermen and boat operators should follow official restrictions and avoid taking risks in rough waters. Residents who depend on boats and floating bridges should check local instructions before travelling, as services may be affected by weather conditions.

Farmers Panic Over Cyclone Arnab Threat

Farmers in the region have been facing several challenges since the beginning of this year’s paddy cultivation season. The threat of Cyclone Arnab has now increased their anxiety, as they fear that heavy rain and strong winds could damage their crops at a crucial stage of growth.

At the beginning of the cultivation season, farmers reportedly faced difficulties obtaining quality improved seeds from government sources. Many were consequently forced to purchase seeds from unauthorised dealers and use them for sowing. This created additional uncertainty and financial pressure for farming households.

The shortage of urea fertiliser during the cultivation period further worsened the situation. Farmers had to purchase fertiliser at higher prices to maintain their crops, increasing their overall production costs.

The difficulties did not end there. Cattle entered agricultural fields and damaged crops, while pest and disease infestations in paddy plants became another serious concern.

Heavy Rain and Strong Winds Could Damage Paddy Crops

The current stage of paddy cultivation has made farmers particularly concerned about Cyclone Arnab. The crops are at the panicle formation stage, an important phase in the development of rice grains. Heavy rainfall and strong winds during this period could cause plants to lodge, or fall over, potentially affecting grain development and reducing yields.

Excessive rainfall can also create water-management problems in agricultural fields. If water accumulates for extended periods, farmers may find it difficult to maintain suitable field conditions. The actual impact would depend on the intensity of rainfall, wind speed, drainage and local field conditions.

For farmers who have already spent heavily on seeds, fertilisers, pesticides and labour, another weather-related setback could be particularly damaging. Many households depend on the paddy harvest to recover their investment and meet their regular expenses.

Farmers Worried About Loan Repayment

Financial pressure is one of the biggest concerns for farmers facing the threat of Cyclone Arnab. Many have borrowed money from different sources, including local moneylenders, to cover the costs of cultivation. They fear that crop damage before harvest could leave them without sufficient income to repay their debts.

A poor harvest could affect not only farmers but also agricultural labourers and other people whose livelihoods depend on farming. Reduced production may create difficulties for households that rely on seasonal agricultural income.

Farmers are therefore hoping that the weather will not cause serious damage to their standing paddy crops. After dealing with seed shortages, high fertiliser prices, cattle damage and pest problems, they are anxious about the possibility of losing their harvest just before it is ready.

What Happens Next?

The threat of Cyclone Arnab has prompted precautionary preparations in Krushnaprasad Block, where officials are monitoring coastal villages, transport facilities and cyclone shelters. Police and administrative teams are working to keep residents informed and encourage fishermen to avoid unsafe waters.

At the same time, farmers in Balanga are worried about the possible impact of adverse weather on their paddy crops. After facing several agricultural and financial challenges, they fear that further crop damage could deepen their losses. The situation highlights the importance of timely warnings, effective local preparedness and careful monitoring of weather conditions.
