Why Mumbai Indians May Consider a Coaching Change
Every IPL franchise regularly reviews its performance, team structure and future plans. Coaching changes can also create opportunities for support staff and players to work with new ideas. At the same time, continuity is important in professional cricket because players need a clear understanding of their roles and responsibilities. Mumbai Indians will need to balance these factors when making decisions about its coaching team.
Jayawardene’s Role Beyond the Head Coach Position
In 2022, Jayawardene moved away from the head coach role and became the franchise’s Global Head of Performance. This position was associated with the wider cricket operations of the Mumbai Indians franchise. It allowed him to contribute beyond the activities of a single team.
His experience in international cricket and franchise coaching made him an important figure in the organisation. The role also reflected the franchise’s wider approach to managing its cricket operations and developing players across its teams.
Jayawardene returned as Mumbai Indians’ head coach in 2025. His return brought a familiar face back into the dugout, with supporters hoping that his earlier success would help the team achieve strong results again.
