Heavy Rain Damages Vegetable Crops by Heavy Rainfall as Cyclone Ashwin Affects Farmers

Nirakarpur, October 29: Farmers in the Nirakarpur area have become increasingly worried over Cyclone Ashwin. Continuous rainfall has raised fears that Rabi crops may be damaged or washed away. Farmers are concerned that heavy rainfall and light winds caused by the cyclone could severely affect vegetable crops and pulse cultivation. There are also fears that vegetable crops planted in low-lying agricultural fields may be submerged due to waterlogging.

Heavy Rainfall Threatens Vegetable Cultivation

This year, weather conditions and agricultural land were favourable for vegetable cultivation. As a result, farmers started planting various crops without delay. These included brinjal, cucumber, tomato, cabbage, fennel, yardlong beans, green chillies, beans, bitter gourd and pointed gourd.

Some farmers had started cultivation early in the hope of harvesting their crops during the Kartik month and earning good profits. However, their expectations have now been affected by the changing weather conditions. Continuous rainfall and strong weather disturbances associated with Cyclone Ashwin have put their crops at risk.

Farmers fear that excessive rainfall could damage standing crops, affect flowering and fruit production, and create waterlogging in agricultural fields. If the situation continues, both crop production and farmers’ expected income could suffer.

Tangi Block Records 58 Millimetres of Rainfall

According to available information, Tangi Block recorded the highest rainfall of 58 millimetres, while the district’s average rainfall stood at 40.64 millimetres. The rainfall has increased concerns about possible damage to vegetable cultivation across the Tangi region.

Farmers are particularly worried because many vegetable crops were approaching their harvesting stage. Excessive water in agricultural fields could affect the quality of vegetables and make harvesting and transportation difficult.

Vegetable Prices Remain Above Rs. 50 Per Kilogram

Meanwhile, rising vegetable prices have become another major concern for the general public. Most vegetables are currently selling at prices above Rs. 50 per kilogram. With the beginning of the Kartik month, people were expecting better vegetable supplies and improved market conditions.

The arrival of cooler weather had raised hopes among farmers that vegetables would sell well during Kartik. However, Cyclone Ashwin has disrupted these expectations. Although the cyclone made landfall along the Andhra Pradesh coast, rainfall continues in both Odisha and Andhra Pradesh under its influence.

If harvesting activities are affected by the continuous rainfall, vegetable supplies to local markets could decline further. This may lead to another increase in prices, creating difficulties for ordinary consumers.

Farmers Fear Financial Losses

According to local farmers, they had recently started harvesting their vegetable crops. Since the crops had produced good yields, they were expecting satisfactory profits this season. However, continuous rainfall caused by the cyclone has affected their agricultural activities.

Farmers stated that vegetable prices have already reached high levels. Except for potatoes, almost all other vegetables are selling above Rs. 50 per kilogram. They are worried that further damage to crops could reduce market supplies and push prices even higher.

The situation has created uncertainty among both farmers and consumers. While farmers are concerned about crop losses, consumers are worried about the increasing cost of essential vegetables.

Horticulture Department to Assess Crop Damage

When contacted, Khordha Assistant Director of Horticulture Shreeya Shashwati stated that rainfall and winds associated with the cyclone could affect vegetable cultivation.

She explained that most farmers had not yet started large-scale vegetable cultivation. However, some farmers who had undertaken early cultivation could suffer losses due to the adverse weather conditions.

She further stated that an assessment would be conducted after the rainfall subsides. A detailed report on the extent of crop damage would subsequently be submitted to the government.

The impact of heavy rain damages vegetable crops has become a major concern among farmers in the Tangi region. Continuous rainfall may affect crop quality, reduce production and cause financial losses to farmers.

Farmers fear that heavy rain damages vegetable crops just before the harvesting season, affecting their expected income. If the rainfall continues, vegetable supplies in local markets may decline further.

Heavy rain damages vegetable crops and could also affect consumers through rising market prices. Farmers are waiting for improved weather conditions and an official assessment of crop losses.

Farmers Await Weather Improvement

Farmers in the Nirakarpur and Tangi areas are now hoping for an improvement in weather conditions so that they can protect their remaining crops and continue harvesting activities. The coming days will be important in determining the extent of agricultural losses caused by Cyclone Ashwin.

Any significant reduction in vegetable production could affect local market supplies and increase the financial burden on consumers. Farmers are therefore waiting for the rain to stop and for the authorities to assess the actual damage to their crops.

Heavy Rain Damages Vegetable Crops in several parts of the Nirakarpur and Tangi regions, creating serious concerns among local farmers. Continuous rainfall associated with Cyclone Ashwin has increased the risk of waterlogging and crop losses. Farmers fear that heavy rain damages vegetable crops just before harvesting, affecting their expected seasonal income.

Heavy Rain Damages Vegetable Crops in Odisha

The impact of Heavy Rain Damages Vegetable Crops is becoming a major concern for agricultural communities. Farmers who invested money and time in early vegetable cultivation are now worried about their future earnings. Excessive rainfall could affect the quality and quantity of vegetables reaching local markets.

Local farmers believe that if the rainfall continues, heavy rain damages vegetable crops across more agricultural areas, potentially reducing the supply of fresh vegetables. This could also put additional pressure on consumers who are already paying high prices in local markets.
