When Will the Foot Overbridge in Front of Rama Devi University Be Built? Issue Raised During Students’ Union Elections
The proposed foot overbridge in front of Rama Devi Women’s University in Bhubaneswar continues to remain limited to official documents, despite the foundation stone being laid around 15 years ago. The long-pending project has once again become a major topic of discussion following the recently concluded students’ union elections.
Rama Devi University Foot Overbridge construction remains a major concern for students of Rama Devi Women’s University in Bhubaneswar. Despite the foundation stone being laid in 2011, the proposed foot overbridge has yet to become a reality. The long-pending project recently became a major issue during the students’ union elections, with candidates demanding immediate construction to ensure the safety and convenience of female students.
Candidates supported by the Biju Chhatra Janata Dal (BCJD) raised the demand for the construction of the Rama Devi University Foot Overbridge in their election manifesto. They highlighted the importance of the project for the safety, security and convenience of female students.
Following the elections, newly elected students’ union representatives and other students have started raising their voices to demand the completion of this long-awaited infrastructure project.
Rama Devi University Foot Overbridge Demand Gains Momentum
According to available information, the university authorities have repeatedly written to the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) regarding the construction of the proposed foot overbridge. Before the students’ union elections, female students also submitted several petitions to the Vice-Chancellor, requesting immediate action.
Although multiple discussions have reportedly taken place between the BMC and university authorities, no concrete outcome has emerged so far. The absence of a foot overbridge continues to create difficulties for students who need to cross the busy road in front of the university.
Students travelling towards Saheed Nagar or visiting the market located opposite the university are forced to take longer routes. This causes inconvenience in their daily movement, particularly during busy hours.
In the absence of a proper pedestrian crossing facility, many students reportedly face difficulties while crossing the road. Concerns have also been raised over road accidents occurring at regular intervals in the area.
Foundation Stone Laid in 2011, But Construction Yet to Begin
One of the most concerning aspects of the Rama Devi University Foot Overbridge project is its long history. The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation laid the foundation stone for the proposed foot overbridge in 2011 on the occasion of Capital Foundation Day.
However, despite the foundation stone ceremony, actual construction work could not begin. Around 15 years have passed, but the project remains incomplete.
Several surveys have reportedly been conducted over the years. However, these efforts have not resulted in the construction of the much-needed pedestrian facility.
At a time when the BMC, Bhubaneswar Smart City Limited and the Bhubaneswar Development Authority (BDA) are undertaking various infrastructure development projects, questions are being raised about why this important project continues to face delays.
Lack of Coordination Allegedly Delays the Project
According to allegations, a lack of coordination between the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation and the Housing and Urban Development Department may be one of the reasons behind the delay.
Despite repeated requests from the university and students, the project has not moved forward. Students are now demanding that the concerned authorities take responsibility and find a permanent solution to the problem.
The construction of the foot overbridge is considered important not only for convenience but also for improving pedestrian safety around the university campus.
Students’ Union President Sonali Behera Raises Concern
Sonali Behera, president of the Rama Devi Women’s University Students’ Union, said that a foot overbridge is a basic necessity for female students and that the BMC and state government should take the matter seriously.
She stated that several promises had been made to students during the election campaign. The students had also submitted a formal petition to the Vice-Chancellor regarding the issue.
According to her, students are often forced to travel long distances even for short journeys because there is no convenient facility to cross the road. She also expressed concern about accidents involving pedestrians in the area.
Sonali Behera further stated that the newly elected students’ union would bring the issue to the attention of the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation and the Odisha state government in the coming days.
She added that if necessary, the students would not hesitate to adopt protest measures to protect their interests and demand the construction of the long-pending foot overbridge.
Students Await Action from BMC and Odisha Government
The proposed Rama Devi University Foot Overbridge has become an important issue for students, university authorities and the local community. The project, which was expected to provide safer and easier road access, has remained incomplete for more than a decade.
Students are now expecting the concerned authorities to take immediate steps towards resolving the issue. They believe that constructing the foot overbridge would significantly improve pedestrian convenience and help create a safer commuting environment around the university.
As the demand gains momentum following the students’ union elections, attention is now focused on whether the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation and the Odisha government will finally take concrete action on the long-pending project.
What Happened In Next?
The delay in the Rama Devi University Foot Overbridge project has raised serious questions about infrastructure planning and pedestrian safety in Bhubaneswar. With students continuing to demand action, the BMC and state government are expected to address their concerns and clarify the future of the proposed project.
